Dehumidifier Size Calculator

Start with your space and how damp it gets. We translate the old chart into a current shopping class.

1. Where will it run?

Square feet · length × width. Chart covers up to 2,500 sq ft.

3. How damp is it in humid weather?

Default below: 2,000 sq ft wet basement. Enable JavaScript to change the estimate.

Your starting point

Buy a 50 pint class

Today · DOE 2019 class 50 pints/day DOE test at 65°F
Historical shopping label 70 pints/day Old test at 80°F

Same shopping category, two rating eras. These bins are approximate, not a model-specific conversion.

How we got it

Chart need: 32 pints/day at 80°F → 35-pint current class → basement size-up → 50-pint class.

See our basement picks →

For a room, skip the size-up. For a basement or crawl space, our editorial rule adds one class, capped at 50. Fix leaks and standing water first.

$7.86 /month estimated powerEstimate using July 2026 EIA rate. ENERGY STAR: 515 kWh/year, includes low-power modes.

EIA U.S. residential average: 18.31¢/kWh · July 2026 (released September 24, 2026). Your tariff and usage will differ.

ENERGY STAR annual energy uses 1,095 active hours (3 hours/day) plus low-power energy. We scale the whole annual figure by hours ÷ 3: an approximation because standby energy does not scale with active hours. Five-year cost = dated purchase price + annual estimated power × 5; no inflation or repairs.

How the calculator works

  1. Round the area up to the next AHAM chart row; read the dampness column.
  2. Choose the smallest historical class (30, 50, 70) covering that need.
  3. Map to our conservative current shopping classes (20, 35, 50). This is an editorial convention, not an exact rating conversion.
  4. For a basement or crawl space, move up one class, capped at 50. Larger or persistently wet spaces need professional assessment.

ENERGY STAR’s model correlations differ: old 50 ≈ new 30, old 60 ≈ new 35, old 70 ≈ new 40–45. The larger shopping bins here are deliberately conservative. Humidity load, temperature, air leakage, and drainage all matter.
